Licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, work under the supervision of doctors or registered nurses to provide basic medical care. They often help connect the patient and their family with the rest of the healthcare team.
Along with doctor’s offices, LPNs often work in hospitals, nursing homes, care facilities and home health care. In California and Texas, LPNs are known as licensed vocational nurses, or LVNs.
What Credentials Does an LPN Have?
An LPN has completed a post-secondary program in practical nursing, which often focuses on topics like patient assessment, medical terminology, anatomy, patient education, nutrition and patient lifespan care. They must also pass a licensing exam.
What Does an Allergy LPN Do?
During your appointment with an allergy LPN, they may:
- Administer an allergy test
- Administer allergy immunotherapy
- Log reactions and wait times
- Counsel you on your next steps and beginning a treatment plan
In the event of an emergency, an allergy LPN also administers anaphylaxis first aid.
